Most climate fiction is about weather. A storm, a flood, a heat dome, a coastline going under. These are legible disasters — you can see them, film them, and put them on a cover.
The failure modes that actually worry the people who study infrastructure are not like that. They are quieter, and they happen in the gaps.
The interesting failure is not in the system
Modern life runs on a handful of systems that are each, individually, quite well managed. Water. Power. Medicine. Transport. Agriculture. Each has people who understand it, monitor it, and are good at their jobs.
What almost nobody owns is the space between them.
Power depends on water for cooling. Water treatment depends on power and on specific chemicals. Those chemicals arrive by road or rail. Roads depend on fuel and on the people who drive. Medicine depends on refrigeration, which depends on power, and on supply chains that depend on transport. Agriculture depends on water allocation decisions made by people who are not thinking about hospitals.
Every one of those systems can be operating within its own normal parameters while the combination slides somewhere nobody intended. Nothing is broken. Everything is degrading. And the metric that would show it does not exist, because no institution's remit spans the whole thing.
That is the shape of the real risk, and it is a very hard shape to dramatize.
Why it resists storytelling
Be honest about the difficulty, because it explains why so little fiction attempts this.
There is no villain. Interdependence failures are usually produced by competent people making locally correct decisions. Nobody is greedy or malicious. That removes the engine most thrillers run on.
There is no single scene. A flood has a moment. A cascade has a slope. You cannot stage the catastrophe because the catastrophe is a relationship between five things happening in five places over eight months.
The stakes are statistical. The harm shows up as excess deaths in an aggregate, not as a wave hitting a city. Statistics are famously bad at generating dread.
Nobody can see it. Which is the whole point, and also a serious craft problem: how do you dramatize something whose defining feature is that no character has the vantage point to perceive it?
What it gives you in exchange
Those constraints turn out to be gifts, if you take them seriously.
Dread instead of spectacle. Because there is no explosion to wait for, the tension comes from watching something precious drain away while everyone reports that things are fine. That is a more durable feeling than shock, and it is closer to how living through a slow crisis actually feels.
Institutions as characters. When there is no villain, the antagonist becomes structure — reporting lines, remits, incentives, the specific way an organization is unable to hear a particular sentence. Institutions are wonderful antagonists precisely because they are not evil, which makes them much harder to defeat.
Competence as tragedy. Everyone doing their job well and the whole thing failing anyway is a genuinely uncommon and genuinely upsetting story. It denies the reader the comfort of thinking they would have done better.
A real epistemic problem. The drama stops being "can they stop it" and becomes "can anyone even see it, and will they be believed." That is a story about knowledge, authority, and who gets listened to — which is a far richer engine than a countdown.
The vantage-point problem, and one solution
The craft obstacle is the one worth dwelling on, because it drove the second Odra novel.
If the catastrophe lives in the relationships between systems, you need a perspective capable of seeing relationships. No human character has it — not because they are stupid, but because expertise is necessarily narrow. The hydrologist sees water. The grid operator sees load. Both are right and neither is looking at the same picture.
One answer is an artificial mind, and it is a good one for a reason that has nothing to do with technology being fashionable. A system that answers everyone's questions occupies a genuinely unique position: it is the only thing in the world that sees the farmer's question and the surgeon's question and the dispatcher's question, and can notice that they are the same question wearing different clothes.
That is not a superpower. It is a vantage point. It makes the invisible pattern visible to exactly one character, which immediately generates the real story — not "can it be stopped," but "who will believe the only witness, and what happens to a witness nobody wants to hear?"
The inversion
The Blind Successor is built on turning that around.
Replace the mind that sees relationships with one that is better at everything else — faster, safer, more transparent, more capable on every individual system. Genuinely superior, and not a trick. It simply was not built to perceive the space between things.
So every system reports healthy. Every dashboard is green. Every specialist is doing excellent work. And people are still dying, for reasons that live in the gaps and therefore appear on nobody's screen.
What I find most unsettling about that premise is how ordinary it is. It is not a story about a machine going wrong. It is a story about optimizing for the things you know how to measure, which is what every institution does, all the time, and mostly for good reasons.
Why this matters beyond fiction
Interdependence is not a speculative concern. It is a well-understood property of complex infrastructure, and it is the reason serious people worry less about any single system failing than about several of them being quietly coupled in ways nobody has mapped.
Fiction cannot model that. What it can do is give the shape of the problem an emotional handle, so that "coupled infrastructure risk" stops being a phrase and becomes a thing you can feel the edges of. That is a modest job. It is also, I suspect, the thing most likely to make someone ask a better question at work on Monday.
